The UK is at the beginning of nuclear new build programme that will see up to 16GW of new nuclear capacity deployed at six sites across England and Wales. While the first project at Hinkley Point C has moved forward into the construction phase, the next project in the pipeline at Wylfa in Anglesey is following close behind with a view to begin operations in the mid-2020s.
The project, under development by Hitachi-owned Horizon Nuclear Power, will entail a £15bn investment in Wales and will be the single largest investment project in the country over the next 10 years. Horizon will rely on the nuclear supply chain of Wales and more widely around the UK and overseas to deliver the nuclear power plant and has already begun work to structure the delivery team responsible for constructing the power station, with major contracts awarded to Bechtel, Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe and JGC New Energy UK Limited (JGC).
With the Development Consent Order applied for in June 2018 and early design and engineering contracts being awarded, now is the time for the supply chain to be engaging to be able to take advantage of the substantial opportunities to come on the project.
