Matthew Henderson, Asset Engineer at SSE, Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm – MSc Energy Engineering and Environmental Management Graduate
Matthew, a graduate from UEA’s MSc programme, was offered work experience at 3sun during his masters course and was offered full-time employment as a result.
Towards the end of my BSc in Natural Sciences at UEA I realised my interest in working in the energy industry so I enrolled on the university’s MSc Energy Engineering and Environmental Management course. I also looked for work experience to gain more knowledge and see what skill sets would make me most employable.
Through Lawrence Coates and Paul Rijks, director and associate professor of my masters course, I was offered a placement at 3sun Group where I completed commissioned research projects looking at the future offshore wind markets and modelling resource requirements. I was offered the chance to return at the end of my masters.
Many of the modules for my masters, I chose with 3sun’s help to ensure I got maximum benefit. I also did tasks with 3sun, relating what I learned to practical scenarios. For my dissertation, I worked out of the 3sun office to see the practical and commercial implications of my chosen subject.
At the end of my masters, I resumed my role as market analyst, continuing my market research work and extending into other areas. I worked as an Market Analyst from September 2013 until June 2016 when I moved into Operations as a Project Engineer within the Inspection division.
As a Project Engineer I managed a significant contract covering the statutory inspection and repair over 500+ offshore wind turbines across the East Coast of the UK. The contract focussed on multi-discipline inspections conducted in a single visit to an asset, minimising turbine downtime and the number of visits offshore required using a ‘one stop shop’ solution.
In January 2018, I joined SSE in Lowestoft as an Asset Engineer as part of the Offshore Wind Engineering team supporting all UK offshore operations.
