Working with Government
The energy sector of the East of England is of critical national and regional economic importance.
Accelerated development of the region’s unrivalled portfolio of energy assets would deliver much of government’s national policy requirements for a balanced energy mix. That is: one that is secure, affordable, sustainable and low carbon.
The energy sector is vitally important to the region and has huge potential. There will be some £50bn net additional investment from today and over the coming 15-20 years.
EEEGR’s national government relations programme is led by the “East of England MPs for Energy”. The MPs and EEEGR have a common objective: growth of the energy sector and hence job creation in the East of England.
The MPs include: Brandon Lewis, MP Great Yarmouth; Peter Aldous, MP Waveney, Therese Coffey, MP Suffolk Coastal and Bernard Jenkins, MP Harwich and North Essex. They orchestrate the support of other MPs in the region and present a formidable force for promotion of the region at the highest levels.
EEEGR works jointly with the MP's in being the one compelling voice for the region, and the catalyst for other parties active in promoting the region’s energy sector. This is through an influencing/advocacy promotion programme. The main activities include: raising Parliamentary Questions, promoting Parliamentary debate, Ministerial briefings and visits, House of Commons reception, promoting the region to energy majors as a World Leading All Energy Hub and 1-2-1 case work.
EEEGR provides a secretariat to the MPs on the energy industry.
EEEGR also works closely with the County Councils (particularly Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk) and local authorities in promoting the region, ensuring that there is one compelling voice for the energy sector; working to attract inward investment for the region.
In addition, the New Anglia LEP is focussing on the energy sector as one of its four key areas for action. EEEGR is working closely with the New Anglia LEP in defining its business plan for the energy sector and delivering it.
