£240 off any basic training - Petans now offer UK wide grants
Marketplace Offer from Petans
The general requirements for the award of a Petans bursary or grant of up to £240 towards any BASIC training for entry to Offshore Oil and Gas, Offshore Renewables or the Maritime industries are listed below. Attached are our revised criteria and some other pointers.
Petans are a Registered Charity, number 290458, and the bursary or grant towards basic training costs is a Petans initiative - it is not available at other training centres. Other providers are commercial or college organisations, and so do not offer financial aid.
Grant funding rules
The Petans grant is up to £240 including VAT per person against eligible Petans basic training costs. It is not normally repayable. (See terms and conditions).
The funding is strictly in accordance with Petans charitable aims and so is only available to persons who meet all of the following criteria;
1. They must be in receipt of government benefits, or be on the HM Forces Resettlement Programme or a recognised Prison Resettlement Programme.
They need to provide written evidence of this status.
2. They must inhabit a permanent residence in a UK postcode area
We would require an original council tax bill or services bill (e.g. an electricity bill) showing a full name and address as evidence
3. They must have a trade or skill that is required or usable in their chosen industry.
The best way to provide this is for any future employer to write offering a post should they obtain the qualification.
We stress the final point, because the successful achievement of any training course is NOT a guarantee of work. Petans would always recommend assessing whether an employer is likely to employ you before spending money time and effort in attending training courses, either here or elsewhere.
Petans never recommend that anyone employs the services of any person or organisation that offers to find them work for a fee.
If you want to work in any industry offshore, Petans can provide the training you need:
Oil and Gas – OPITO accredited
The 3 day Basic Survival or BOSIET course is run here in Norwich up to 3 times every week and will equip you to work offshore for a period of four years in the UK, Dutch or Danish sectors.
The BOSIET from Petans for 2012 is £600 + VAT, which is significantly less than some even before the award. With a maximum grant this is only £400 + VAT
Another qualification becoming more widely requested to join the Oil and Gas business is MIST - the Minimum Industry Safety Training. MIST standalone from Petans is 2 days and costs £300 plus VAT. However if you take the BOSIET and MIST together then the MIST is reduced to £200 plus VAT.
The final thing somebody needs for the Oil and Gas business is a North Sea Medical Certificate – these are only issued by Oil and Gas UK accredited doctors.

N.B. Whilst possession of a valid medical certificate is NOT a prerequisite for survival training, it is required before going offshore. If there is any doubt as to whether someone is fit to work in any offshore industry we would recommend they undertake a relevant medical first to ensure any training is worthwhile.
Maritime STCW95 training - MCA accredited
All vessel crew have to hold STCW95 basic training certification in four areas:
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
Basic fire prevention and fire fighting
Elementary First Aid
Personal Survival Techniques
Petans offer these individually or as a 5 day package at £895 + VAT, with the maximum grant this is reduced to £695 + VAT
Offshore Windpower – Renewable UK, MCA and internally accredited
The basic requirements for access to this relatively new industry are best understood by talking to your prospective employers. As a course becomes the norm for all companies we shall adopt it. In the meantime we offer as close to a common standard as we can, from Renewable UK and MCA accredited courses.
We are therefore able to offer;
Working and Rescue from height (Renewable UK)
Personal Survival Techniques (MCA)
Marine Transfer training (In-House cert)
Petans offer these individually or as a 4 day package at £925 + VAT, with the maximum grant this is reduced to £725 + VAT
