Background to the SNS Rejuvenation SIG

The Southern North Sea is at a critical juncture. For over 50 years, the basin has developed and delivered strong gas production through a diverse network of offshore platforms, pipelines and onshore terminals. The basin has been well exploited and the opportunity to identify and develop large “landmark” discoveries is increasingly limited.

Nonetheless, significant potential remains within the basin. However, these remaining opportunities are predominantly characterised as marginal pools and tight gas. They are increasingly expensive and complex to access. Both technical and commercial risks are high and opportunities can be quickly disregarded as uneconomic.

The challenge for the Southern North Sea is now to harness this remaining potential by searching for innovative business and technical solutions. This challenge is a set against a back drop of depressed commodity prices, ageing infrastructure and increasing unit transportation costs, as production from existing developments continues to decline.

The OGA has tasked EEEGR to work with Oil and Gas UK to form a Special Interest Group to examine these issues, establish a steering group, organise work groups and deliver events, reports and workshops to ensure that our region Maximises Economic Recovery (MER) of the remaining hydrocarbon reserves in the Southern North Sea.

Under the chairmanship of Fraser Weir of Centrica the steering group has been formed and working groups established. Initial areas for examination are:

  • Carboniferous (tight gas) and small pool reserves
  • Best practice and learning from the renewables sector including joint initiatives
  • Best practice and learning from the Dutch SNS sector
