Towards 2010

Towards 2010 was a region-wide initiative valued at £4.5m, funded by the European Social Fund through the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and managed by the Essex Development and Regeneration Agency (ExDRA).

The Energy sector was awarded £617,500K to distribute to regional businesses between September 2005 and August 2007. EEEGR had responsibility for delivery of the fund to the energy industry through the Skills for Energy programme.

Towards 2010 was an innovative approach to tackling skills and competence based training issues in that unlike its predecessors it was "demand driven" and based upon perceived critical needs of businesses as identified by their senior managers and supported by their business plans.

Small and medium-sized businesses including soles traders could apply for up to 70% of the invoiced cost of training (excluding VAT) that they perceive as being critical in delivering their business plans.  Larger businesses (annual turnover is greater than €40m and/or their balance sheet net worth is greater than €27m [group if a wholly-owned subsidiary]) could apply for up to a maximum 50% intervention.

Through EEEGR, the Towards 2010 (Energy) fund has helped to support:

  • 462 businesses making applications
  • 1112 individuals going through some level of training
  • over £630,000 funds being distributed

Including company's own contributions, a total investment of over £1.1 million in training has happened in the region's energy industry!
