OrbisEnergy - Offshore Renewable Business

Officially opened in November 2008 by Lord Hunt, Minister of State for Department of Energy and Climate Change, OrbisEnergy provides its occupants and visitors with unparalleled access to the business opportunities and expertise offered by the region's prosperous natural offshore energy sector.

Owned by Suffolk County Council and managed by business support specialists NWES, the uniquely designed building comprises 38 individual business units, with easy-in, easy-out tenancy terms.

The £9.4 million project has received funding from East of England Development Agency and is part-financed by the European Union, with additional contributions from Waveney District Council.

First class business services include excellent internet and telecoms links, postal services, and full secretarial support. The stunning conference suite accommodates gatherings of up to 220 people, and with wide sweeping windows and access to the external ‘terraces', guests will enjoy excellent views of the sea located just 30 yards from the building.

OrbisEnergy's unique design, from the stunning glass atrium, to the informal meeting and social spaces, will make it the perfect environment for generating ideas and for effective networking.

Features of the BREEAM standard building, which received a ‘very good' rating, include a biomass boiler fuelled by locally sourced woodchip and solar thermal energy to heat the building's water. Permeable rain-screen cladding and brise-soleil have been designed to guard against harsh seashore conditions and shade occupants from bright coastal sunshine.

It is projected that more than £10 billion will be spent over the next 10 years on developing offshore energy off the Suffolk coastline. OrbisEnergy will be the hub of this renewables activity and will link with the NWES managed Beacon Innovation Centre (offshore gas) and East Suffolk Business Centre (nuclear) to form a significant "corridor of power" in the sub-region in supporting innovation in energy.
