Next Generation Biofuel - Trends in Global Innovation and Finance:
4 day UK Mission to Houston, Atlanta and Miami -
15-18 October 2007

Current and next generation industrial biotechnology methods and techniques are meeting the global energy challenge. New approaches are being developed and deployed in the US and the UK by major oil companies, agribusiness, ventured-backed start-ups and research groups. A large part of how industrial biotechnology will meet the global, sustainable energy challenge is the economical conversion of renewable biomass such as switchgrass and algae, as well as biowaste such as wood chips and animal fats into bioethanol and biodiesel via engineered organisms and biocatalysts processed in large-scale bio-reactors. The economics of these approaches, particularly biodiesel from algae, are very attractive and as technical barriers come down on both sides of the Atlantic products will come to market more rapidly.
